Laboratory

Purpose

Designed to integrate lecture subject matter with hands-on experience, the laboratory primarily serves to expose students to soil and soil related environmental issues. Activities will include soil description and analysis, soil and landscape assessment, nutrient assessment and management, composting, soil system modeling and soil information and interpretation.

Lecture topics generally precede laboratory activities, but subject matter is integrated into the entire semester and individual laboratories should not be viewed as a stand alone activity. Lecture and laboratory build upon each other throughout the semester. This approach reinforces knowledge by emphasizing the integrated nature of soil processes and providing real world examples while practicing the applications of Soil Science.

Location

The laboratory is located in Bradfield room 102 (across from the lecture hall). We will meet there for all laboratories and travel from there as appropriate.

Waiver for Field Trips

Please review the Field Trip Waiver before coming to your first laboratory. The first laboratory is a field trip and you will not be allowed to go without your signature.

Times

Once weekly from 1:25 pm to 4:25 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. On field days, vans leave promptly at 1:30pm. We return approximately by 4:25 pm.

Lab Write-up Format

Laboratories write-ups are expected to meet a minimum standard of quality. Failure to meet these standards will result in lab re-writes AND decreased grades.

Laboratory Notes

Laboratory Subject

Please print and READ your weekly Laboratory manual BEFORE you come to class!

Lab 1 – Soil Characteristics and Parent Material

Get Cornell Soil Survey here>>

Get Soil Series Descriptions here>>

Lab 1 is due Week 3

Lab 2 – Land Use and Soils

Go to Web Soil Survey. The website is not hosted at a local server and as such maybe slow to initially load. If you do not see a map on the site selection page, close the page and re-click on the green start button.

Lab 2 is due Week 5

Lab 3 – Soil Mapping

Tompkins County Soil Module - Explore this web module to develop a concept of soils within the County. First select a landform (by clicking on the picture) and then choose a Parent Material for a selection of soils using the pull down menus below. Refine your choice if desired. Finally select an individual Soil Series and CLICK to "display soil description" - remember to look at the ranges of characteristics too!
