The CAO uses the food/landscaping waste that the college generates to create compost, all of which they use onsite & year round in their 3 green houses and outdoor beds. There are numerous sites on campus that are now sorting their food/landscaping waste for composting: Campus House Restaurant, Caudell Hall Food Labs, Campus Dining Services & the Grounds Department. Each of the sites generates compostables and deposits them into 35 gal totes on wheels that are put out to the curb twice a week for pickup by CAO. The first week of the campus wide program began on April 1st , 2013 and has been a great success. The campus participation in this program has been outstanding and it continues to grow. This new program will allow the college to reduce its waste stream and collaborate with the CAO and their great initiatives with our surrounding community. Set seeds/plants in place and cover with soil; (3) Perennials - Work 1/2 cup into soil above the root zone taking care not to damage the shallow roots. Apply in spring, early summer and fall; (4) Roses, Trees, Shrubs and Berries (New and Freshly Transplanted) - Mix 1 part earthworm castings to 3 parts soil. Sprinkle newly dug hole with mixture. Spread roots over a mound of the mix in the hole and cover. These are guidelines. Use as little or as much as you like. Earthworm castings will not burn plants at any concentration. Each week students mix manure, leaves, and wood chips (sourced from campus) with food scraps and coffee grounds." In-vessel composting	"The Skidmore Compost program currently uses a small-scale three-bin system. In total, the structure is about 12 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet tall. Each week, student compost managers and volunteers collect food scraps from on-campus apartments and coffee grounds from Dining Services. Students turn the piles, add carbon sources, and record total collected food waste. Each student apartment receives compostable paper bags to collect food scraps in, helping to increase cleanliness, leading to increased participation. Once the compost is mature students deliver the finished product to the Skidmore Student Garden. The only soil amendment required by the Skidmore Student Garden is the compost produced by this program. All food produced in the Student Garden is sold to Dining Services.
