Abstract

The Land and Water Management Extension Program, lead by Harold van Es, provides education to a broad audience including agricultural producers and advisors, agency staff, local government officials, and concerned citizens in New York State and the Northeast region. The program successfully capitalizes on distance learning methods, including broadcast, videotape, and the Web. Currently, three projects are underway: Greener at Home, a public television series to provide education for householders; a self-audit tool for small water system operators to assist them in water supply protection; and Community-based Environmental Decision-making, an inter-disciplinary project to develop environmental management education and strategies for local government. CbEDM is exploiting the educational and land use management capabilities of resource information technologies, including remote sensing, aerial photo interpretation, and geographic systems.
