Hudson River Stewardship: Recreational Boaters and Submerged Aquatic Vegetation

New York Sea Grant recently secured funding from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for a Hudson River education project to increase boating community awareness, understanding and stewardship of the Hudson River's vegetated shallows.

In partnership with the Cornell University Institute for Resource Information Systems, The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Mid-Hudson United States Power Squadron and the Hudson Valley Marine Trades Association, New York Sea Grant will deliver a submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) education program to targeted boater groups.

The program will include a series of workshops, the creation and use of educational displays, slide sets and electronic and printed material.

The initiative is one in a series of educational activities planned in conjunction with inventory and monitoring of SAV beds in the Hudson River, designed to educate resource managers and resource users about the function and value of submerged aquatic vegetation.
