CONTENTS

The facilities of the GIS lab in IRIS include hardware and software for image processing and geo-spatial analysis, as well as a wide array of ancillary and supporting equipment.  The current configuration of computer hardware resources includes: UNIX, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 based systems sharing processing and data via a 100mb local area network.

Hardware

The UNIX network includes:

  • 2 - SUN Blade 1000s with 750 MHz UltraSPARC III Processor, 512 MB RAM, 18 GB hard drive, and
  • 1 - SUN Ultra2 with 384 MB RAM, 45 GB hard drive.

The Windows XP network includes:

  • 1 - Gateway/Intel Pentium III Zeon 550 Mhz workstation with 1.2. GB RAM, 36 GB SCSI hard drive, and 20" color monitor, and
  • 3 - Dell/Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHz workstations with 1 GB RAM, 40 GB SCSI hard drive, and 20" color monitor.

All systems have access to approximately 250 GB of disk space, an Altex backlite digitizing tablet, JAZ and ZIP cartridge storage devices, CDWriters, an AIT 25/20 backup device, an HP LaserJet 4100 printer (8.5" x 11" b/w), an HP 2500C professional series color printer (13" x 19" color), and two large format (36" width, roll feed) HP color printers (DesignJet 650c and 750c+).

Complimenting the above systems are:

  • Eight Pentium 4 laptop computers
  • Five GTCO Rollup digitizing tablets (24" x 20")
  • Two Trimble GeoExplorer GPS units

Software

A large suite of applications software provides state-of-the-art capabilities for image processing, mapping, modeling, statistical analysis, and visualization.  Access to the following major software systems is provided at IRIS:

ArcView, ArcGIS, and ArcInfo (http://www.esri.com)

A SUNY-ESF site license for ESRI products provides the primary GIS analysis and modeling tools for IRIS users.

ERDAS Imagine (http://www.erdas.com)

IRIS has a 15-seat site license for Imagine Professional with the Vector and Virtual GIS Modules.

The lab also provides access to a variety of other software packages including:

  • statistical (S-Plus, Fragstats, Canoco, SPSS)
  • spreadsheet and word processing (MS Office, Star Office)
  • image editing (Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Photoshop)
  • HTML editing (Dreamweaver)
  • GPS (Pathfinder Office)
