Variety Evaluation
Ithaca, NY. The number of available grass varieties is now increasing at a rate only exceeded by the proliferation of alfalfa varieties (39 new alfalfa varieties for 1996). A study to determine heading dates of most currently available orchardgrass varieties (30 varieties) was initiated in New York and Vermont in 1995. Little data is available on persistence, yield or quality of all the new varieties, but the variable of most concern to achieving optimum forage quality is maturity or heading date. New varieties will be added to the trial as they appear on the market.
