Planting Dates:
Plant in the first week of June or when soil temperatures reach 12-15° C. This will ensure maximum yields (at least two cuts). If planted before the last week of July you could harvest at least one cut.
Planting:
Plant in a well prepared, moist, firm seed bed in rows. The seeds should be drilled 1" deep at the rate of 9 lbs/acre. We recommend planting forage sorghum in rows 12-16" wide. Decreasing the row width may increase yields. However spacing trials will only be conducted in the 1998 growing season.
Fertilizer:
Fertilize according to soil fertility levels. As a general guide, 120 kg of N, 40 kg of P and 40 kg of K, applied in split doses is recommended. Apply half of the N fertilizer after planting and apply the rest after the first cut.
Weed Control:
Weed control can be accomplished by harrowing just before planting and by chemical weed control. Cultivating is possible if planted in wide rows. In the states, Basagran, Atrazine, and 2-4D are being used. The second year of chemical weed control trials are being conducted by Dr. John O’Sullivan, OMAFRA.
Harvesting:
Your first cut should come 60-65 days after planting (when the plants are two-three feet high). Your second cut, 30-35 days after first cut. You should leave 4" of stubble to ensure proper re-growth. Forage sorghum makes excellent silage. It can also be fed as green chop. Haying is possible, if a conditioner is used.
