Watershed

The Watershed

A watershed (catchment, drainage basin) is a unit of land from which surface, subsurface, and groundwater runoff flow to a common outlet. The morphology of a watershed is the result of geologic history, climate, and the time over which these factors have acted.

Relevant physical characteristics of a watershed are:

  • outlet and base level
  • boundary (divide)
  • size
  • shape
  • elevation and gradient
  • aspect and orientation
  • drainage network
  • soils and geology
  • vegetation
  • cultural activities
