Watershed
The shape of the runoff hydrograph results from various modes of water flow in the watershed landscape. Surface runoff or overland flow responds most rapidly to precipitation; interflow, or subsurface flow shows a delayed response; baseflow responds slowly (i.e. at a more nearly seasonal timescale).
