Sesbania grandiflora
Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers.
Family: Leguminosae (Papilionoideae); Synonyms: Agati grandiflora (L.) Desv.
Description: Medium sized, fast growing tree to 10 m. The stem is straight and the tree produces a mass of large, white flowers. Some trees produce pink or red flowers (variety difference?). Tolerates flooding and nodulates profusely.
Distribution: Native to Asia and S.E. Asia but is now widely distributed in the humid tropics.
 Environmental Requirements:

Altitude: Sea level to 500 m
Rainfall: 1000 to 2,500 mm. In semi arid locations, it thrives in riverine habitats and irrigated valleys.
Soils: Non-acid soils (pH>6). Flooding removes the soil acidity constraint as pH increases to ~7 within a few weeks of flooding. The species shows good adaptability to Vertisols ('black cotton soils').
Ecozone: Sub-humid to humid locations.

Establishment: The seed does not need any treatment. It can also be established via cuttings.
Pests & Diseases: Highly susceptible to nematodes.
Uses: Soft wood good for pulp; edible flowers and leaves (eaten steamed or lightly fried); high quality forage (crude protein of leaves >30%); grown on rice field boundaries (bunds) for green manure.
