Prosopis cineraria
Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce
Family: Leguminosae (Mimosoideae). Synonyms: P. spicigera L.; Local names: Khejri; jandi
Description: Small to medium sized tree reaching a height of 12m.The canopy remains green for most of the dry season.
Distribution: Arid regions of northwestern India. Also found in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia.
 Environmental Requirements:

Altitude: Sea level to 200 m
Rainfall: 200 to 800 mm
Soils: Sandy, alkaline soils (pH 7-9). Also found on Vertisols.
Ecozone: Semi-arid to arid

Establishment: Direct seeding, seedlings or root suckers. Seed retains viability for several years. Dipping in hot water (80 C) and cooling and soaking for 24 hours enhances seed germination.
Pests & Diseases: No information available
Uses: Excellent firewood and charcoal; greatly valued for its high quality fodder (leaves and pods) during the dry season; retained by farmers on crop fields because it "increases the yields of crops growing close to the tree;" good for sand dune stabilization.
