Albizia lebbek (L.)
Family: Leguminosae (Mimosoideae); Synonyms: Mimosa lebbeck L.; M. sirissa Roxb.; Local names: Siris; acacia amarilla; East Indian walnut
Description: Deciduous tree reaching heights of around 25 m with a spreading canopy. It is generally fairly shallow rooted and is susceptible to windthrow.
Distribution: Native to S. Asia and is especially common in India. It has been widely distributed to other sub-humid regions in the tropics.
 Environmental Requirements:

Altitude: Sea level to around 1,800 m
Rainfall: 800 to 2,000 mm
Soils: Well drained soils, low soil acidity (pH>6), does not tolerate high aluminum saturation; is quite tolerant of soil salinity and salt spray in coastal areas
Ecozone: Sub-humid and humid

Establishment: Seeds, seedlings, root suckers. Seeds are dipped in hot water (80 C) and allowed to cool and soak for 24 hours.
Pests & Diseases: Needs to be protected against browsing. In humid areas, caterpillars often defoliate it.
Uses: Good firewood. The tree coppices well so does not have to be replanted. The young foliage is reputed to be an excellent fodder and green manure.
