System Performance and Management

For alley cropping to be a meaningful alternative to unsustainable slash and burn agriculture, it has to be accepted by farmers and extend itself from trial plots into farmer's fields and newly cleared crop lands. Adoption by farmers depends on a number of factors, e.g. ease of establishment, labor intensities, and multiple utilization of hedgerows, but the foremost determinant in farmers' decision is crop yield.
