The ASB Program: Phase II (1996-1998)

Goals | "Best bet" Land use Systems |
Results & Implications for Development:
[Summary of Achievements | Carbon sequestration & Greenhouse gas fluxes | Aboveground (plant) biodiversity | Belowground biodiversity | Agronomic sustainability | Socioeconomic and policy concerns]

Achievements of ASB Phase II Program

  • Establishment of integrated multi-disciplinary teams at the benchmark sites.
  • Implementation of protocols for characterisation and measurements necessary for ASB research.
  • Increased awareness of the issues surrounding the debate over slash-and-burn agriculture on the part of national collaborators thereby positively impacting research agendas and policy debates.
  • Identification of preliminary 'best bet' or promising alternative land-use practices to replace recurring slash-and-burn agriculture.
  • Design and implementation of a matrix to synthesise the different data collected by the ASB researchers. This matrix facilitates the analysis of tradeoffs among environmental, socioeconomic and policy concerns relating to alternative land-use practices.
  • Training of national collaborators in the methods for data measurement and interpretation. The consortium is an excellent example of South-South collaboration on methodological and policy issues relevant to reducing deforestation and slash-and-burn agriculture.
