The ASB Program: Phase II (1996-1998)

Goals | "Best bet" Land use Systems |
Results & Implications for Development:
[Summary of Achievements | Carbon sequestration & Greenhouse gas fluxes | Aboveground (plant) biodiversity | Belowground biodiversity | Agronomic sustainability | Socioeconomic and policy concerns]

Land Use Systems described, measured and evaluated at each benchmark site:

At each site, "best bet" alternatives to traditional slash and burn agriculture were identified on the basis of the characterisation work conducted during Phase I. Although the particulars varied at each site, the land use systems fall under one of the following land use categories:

a) Natural forest
b) Forest extraction
c) Complex, multi-strata agroforestry systems
d) Simple tree crop systems
e) Crop/fallow systems
f) Continuous annual cropping systems
g) Grasslands/pastures

For the specific land use systems that were selected and studied at each benchmark site Click Here.

The data collected from these systems was analysed for tradeoffs among global environmental benefits and socioeconomic factors important to local farmers. For the factors used in the evaluation Click here.
