  • Assess climate change implications of alternative land use problems to determine those land-use systems that sequester more carbon, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and slow deforestation and subsequent land degradation for each of the benchmark countries.
  • Assess the impact of different land use practices on biodiversity, including current slash and burn practices; and determine patterns of land use that best support biodiversity over and above current practices.
  • Link environmental benefits to sustainable alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture: produce recommendations of those alternatives to slash and burn practices best suited to integrating environmental benefit and to select those policies, institutional frameworks and their implementation mechanisms that facilitate the adoption of these recommended land-use practices.
