Development of standard methods, procedures and protocols

Benchmark sites | Establishment of multidisciplinary teams | Development of standard methods, procedures and protocols | Scientists trained in ASB research methods | Outputs and achievements

A manual of standard research methods incorporating socioeconomic, ecological and agricultural techniques was published and distributed to all ASB collaborators ('Procedural guidelines for characterisation' C. Palm, A-M. Izac and S. Vosti, 1995, 33p.). These methods were used to establish the essential baseline of comparability between sites both within the project and with areas being studied by other groups (such as GCTE). Data collection activities began on vegetation mapping, household and community surveys, and carbon stock measurements.

A series of 6 protocols of methods for research on climate change and biodiversity were developed via a collaborative process involving members of the multidisciplinary teams at the benchmark sites:

  • Assessing carbon balances in natural and agroecosystems
  • Identifying nutrients limiting productivity in agroecosystems
  • Adapting the CENTURY Ecosystem Carbon Simulation Model to agroecosystems derived via forest conversion by slash-and-burn agriculture
  • Monitoring greenhouse gas fluxes in natural and agroecosystems
  • Estimating plant biodiversity via plant functional attributes, and traditional indices of species numbers and taxonomic richness
  • Estimating soil biodiversity based on key functional groups of fauna and microflora

These protocols on ASB methods are being revised based on field testing in Phases I & II and will be available for general use by the end of Phase II (December, 1998).
