Sites:
In Phase
I (1994-1995),
benchmark
sites
were established
at the
tropical
forest
margins
in Brazil,
Cameroon
and Indonesia,
multidisciplinary
research
teams
were assembled,
research
protocols
developed,
local
teams
of researchers
were trained,
and detailed
characterisation
of the
sites
was completed.
The
site in
Cameroon
represents
the humid
forest
margins
of the
equatorial
Congo
Basin
rain forest,
a zone
of rapid
demographic,
social
and environmental
change.
In Brazil,
the site
is in
the Western
Amazon
rain forest
region,
which
is subject
to rapid
development
through
government-sponsored
resettlement
schemes.
In Indonesia,
the site
in Sumatra
exemplifies
various
types
and stages
of deforestation
and degraded
lands
covered
with Imperata
cylindrica.

factors
that are

in a significant
area of
the humid
tropics.
