CSS 695 (Planning and Reporting Research)

Cornell University

SUMMARY OF WORK REQUIRED

  1. Write a short scientific paper.  It may be a graduate thesis proposal including a literature review, a thesis chapter, a scientific manuscript to be submitted for publication, etc.  It will be intensively reviewed and should be only five to ten pages long.
  2. Prepare and present a 10-15 minute talk based on the above paper.  The talk is to use PowerPoint slides and overhead transparencies that you have made yourself.
  3. Prepare and present a poster based on the above.  The poster is to follow ASA guidelines and should include a handout of the material on the poster.
  4. Weekly assignments listed in the syllabus involve writing and reviewing projects that must be handed in during the course.
  5. In addition, numerous readings will be distributed to the class to provide further recommendations on how to plan and report research.  The readings are not required but they help with assignments and are useful for future reference.

Note that there are no exams.  In this course, “most of the learning comes from doing.”  Grades will be based on what you do in the five units outlined above.
