The biology, behavior and function of microorganisms in natural environments are discussed in relation
to past and present environmental conditions on Earth. The role of microorganisms in ecologically and
environmentally significant processes is also considered through discussion of specific topics such as
elemental cycles, nutrient cycling transformation of pollutant chemicals, wastewater treatment and
environmental biotechnology.
