The principles for field identification of soil properties, profiles, and landscapes are presented. A series of soil pits are examined, described, classified, and interpreted in the field intending to prepare the students to be part of the Cornell Soil Judging Team.

• To be able to correctly use the methodology and terminology for identifying and describing soil properties, profiles, and landscapes in the field.
• To be able to correctly classify soils in the field using the principle contained in Soil Taxonomy.
• To be able to correctly interpret soil properties for various land use purposes.
