Laboratory objectives:
Overall objectives of the CSS 312 laboratory are to provide (1) firsthand experiences in the identification and appraisal of the major forage crops and the forms in which they are fed, (2) practical demonstrations of the principles of producing and utilizing forage and feed crops, (3) practical experience in the use of some of the equipment and methods associated with forage crop identification, production, utilization, and evaluation, and (4) integration of related concepts in the formulation of forage production plans.

  • Feb. 12 (Forage preservation and evaluation - Part 2 - corn and hay crop silages)
  • Feb. 19 (Forage-animal stresses - bloat, grass tetany, nitrate poisoning, etc.; Homework: WWW forage resources); FOR(I) Chapter 18
  • Feb. 26 (The pests of forage crops - insects, diseases, weeds); FOR(I) Chapter 13
  • March 5 (Integrated pest management of forages; Homework: sprayer calibration)
  • March 12 (Forage improvement and breeding; at Guterman Laboratory Building); FOR(I) Chapter 15

  • April 23 (Practical examination covering laboratory material)
  • April 30 (Field trip on grazing management)

Laboratory grading:
Your final laboratory grade will account for 25% of your grade in this course. One third of your lab grade will be based on the practical examination given in the next-to-the-last week. The remainder will be based on weekly quizzes and homework grades.
